With enough members of the Church in the Courtroom to make it appear as a Sunday mass, Senior Pastor at the Universal Church, Holeno Luiz, was today refused bail and remanded to prison after being charged for causing death by dangerous driving.

The 35-year-old pastor and televangelist was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when he appeared before the Chief Magistrate.

The Prosecution’s case is that on March 3rd, 2017, the Brazilian national drove his car, PPP 4765, in a dangerous manner while speeding along Smyth Street. He failed to stop at the intersection and collided with motorcyclist, Maurice Moseley.

The man was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

During a bail application, the Pastor’s Attorney told the Court that all his defendant wants to do is “spread the word of the God” and would not be a flight risk.

The Magistrate was not too impressed with the application and sided with the Prosecutor who objected to bail and reminded the Court that the man would travel regularly between Guyana and his homeland of Brazil.

Bail was refused and the matter will come up again later this month.

Pastor Holeno Luiz has been in Guyana for the past three years and in addition to pastoring the Church locally, he also hosts a number of television programmes on local tv.
