Patricia Chase-Green re-elected as City Mayor; Akeem Peter is new Deputy

With overwhelming support from her fellow Councillors, Patricia Chase – Green was today re-elected for the third consecutive year to serve as Mayor of the City of Georgetown. She was unopposed for the post.

But the upset at Thursday afternoon’s City Council elections came when serving Deputy Mayor Lionel Jaikaran failed to even secure a nomination for the post.

Youth prevailed and Jaikaran will be replaced by his fellow Coalition Councillor Akeem Peter who will serve alongside Chase Green as Deputy Mayor for the next year, beginning April 1st.

Through a vote by a show of hands, both Chase-Green and Peter were unopposed for the election and were declared Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively by unanimous consent.

Peter spoke briefly to the media just after his election and not only congratulated Chase-Green but said he intends to work alongside her and be her eyes and ears over the next year.

He said intends to use his influence in this position to change the image of the Council, pointing out that he takes the office at a time when the Council is attracting negative press.

Former Deputy Mayor and AFC member Sherod Duncan had attempted to nominate Outgoing Deputy Mayor Jaikaran but another Councillor had already moved to close nominations.

Jaikaran told the media after that the AFC has been kicked to the curb, a reasoning that Peter refuted. He said the APNU majority Council has expressed confidence in his ability to serve at this level.

Jaikaran was the first to offer well wishes, explaining that the speech had been written since yesterday.

He said he departs office with his head held high and a clear conscience, having always stuck to his principles.
