According to a police report, the incident took place just before 10:00 pm as Akeem Yorrick was on his way home.

A 23-year-old man from Plaisance on the East Coast of Demerara was shot dead last evening while walking home as a Sparendaam resident attempted to fight off a group of residents who were accusing him of being involved in an armed robbery.

According to a police report, the incident took place just before 10:00 pm as  Akeem Yorrick was on his way home.  Several residents were at the time confronting  a Sparendaam Squatting area man about being involved in criminal activity when the man fired a shot in the direction of the crowd and the bullet struck the young man.

“During the ensuing altercation the man discharged a round into the group of residents fatally wounding Akeem Yorrick, 23 years, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara”, the police statement said.

The armed man was able to escape from the scene as Yorrick was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Relatives of the young man cried loudly at the hospital as they reflected on his life and said he must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. They want justice ot be solved in the matter.

Investigations are in progress.
