Even as the Opposition People’s Progressive Party continues to boycott the ongoing house-to-house registration exercise, the Government is encouraging citizens to ignore the opposition’s boycott and get themselves registered.

At a PNC press conference this morning, party member and Minister of Finance Winston Jordan said the position of the coalition has not changed when it comes for the need for house-to-house registration being used to produce and clean voters’ list for the elections.

“We believe that only house-to-house registration which has been approved by the independent Elections Commission will cleanse the list of in excess of 200,000 entrants there that ought not to be there, provide access to young people who have come of age to be on the list and ensure an election where there is a minimal chance of trouble after the results are announced”, Jordan said.

The Chief Justice recently turned down a request by Attorney Christopher Ram for the house-to-house registration exercise to be stopped. The opposition PPP maintains that it will continue to be non-cooperative with the process.

Under the laws of Guyana, persons could be charged for an offense if they refuse to register. Questioned about that issue this morning, Minister Jordan said it is a matter for the Police to address if complaints are made, noting that the law is clear.

“There is no question about engaging the Police to not execute the laws of the land, absolutely no question. Otherwise, where do we stop”, he said.

The Guyana Elections Commission has employed and trained more field staff to increase step up its registration exercise across the country.
