Police Complaints Authority to probe Police shooting death of Haslington youth; Special Branch rank under close arrest

The Guyana Police Force on Sunday afternoon announced that the Special Branch Police rank at the centre of the shooting death of Haslington youth Quindon Bacchus has been placed under close arrest as the Police Complaints Authority is set to investigate the incident.

Bacchus was shot dead on Friday afternoon by the Special Branch Officer during a reported undercover operation in the Haslington community.

While the Police have provided two different versions of the incident, claiming that the youth opened fire on the Police, surveillance video recordings from a nearby house do not appear to support the Police’s story.

Protests erupted in the East Coast village of Haslington this afternoon as the residents demanded justice and the family called out for a thorough and impartial probe into the incident.

The dead man’s mother who identified his body said there were multiple gunshot wounds to her son’s body and one to the head.

In the surveillance video recording, the plain clothes Police Officer could be seen running behind the youth as several gunshots could be heard.

A group of school children heading home was forced to run for cover as the Police fired off multiple shots.

The Guyana Police Force claimed that Bacchus was about to sell a firearm to an undercover officer when he ran and opened fire. The Police said a .380 gun with one live round and one spent shell were recovered from the scene.

An eyewitness to the incident who reportedly doubted the Police Force’s version has been in custody since Friday.

The protesting residents also want him released.
