Police constable gunned down at Sophia home

Just one day after Police Commissioner Leroy Brummel declared war against criminals, a young police constable was gunned down in his yard in North Sophia, Georgetown.

The dead policeman has been identified as 30-year-old constable Michael Cumberbatch. The incident took place just after 9:30 on Monday night. According to the policeman’s mother Jacqueline Cumberbatch, her late son’s wife told her that the couple was at home when they heard a knocking at the door. The wife reportedly peeked outside and came face to face with a man who inquired about the whereabouts of a man by the name of Quacy.

The young wife told the man that there was no Quacy living there but the man kept on knocking at the door. It was at that time that the young policeman opened the door and told the man that there was no one by the name of Quacy living at the address and he should leave the yard.

The policeman reportedly decided to escort the man out of his yard and it was while he was walking him out of the yard, the man turned around and shot him at close range, according to wife.

The policeman laid motionless as the gunman escaped. He was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where doctors were unable to save his life. His mother said her son is attached to the Tactical Services Unit of the Police Force and she does not know of any problem that he may have had with anyone. She said she too is unaware of any Quacy that was living at the couple’s home which they shared with his wife’s sister.

At the Georgetown Hospital, police investigators were seen questioning a man who they believe may know the gunman.

Police Constable Cumberbatch has left to mourn his wife and a young child and his parents and other relatives.

On Sunday at a Community meeting on the West Coast of Demerara, Police Commissioner Leroy Brummel called on citizens to do more to protect themselves and their families and declare a war on criminals. He said communities need to do more to protect themselves as the crime rate continues to climb.
