Police Constable now charged for manslaughter in car chase shooting death

The Police Constable who was initially charged with murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Cecil Sampat, has now been charged with manslaughter after the DPP withdrew the murder charge.

25-year-old, Police Constable Troy Munroe appeared before the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan today and was not required to enter a plea to the manslaughter charge.

After the charge was read, the Police Constable was released on $150,000 bail. He is being represented by Attorney Patrice Henry and will make his next Court appearance on the 5th of January.

Constable Munroe and Police Corporal Godwin Thomas were initially charged with the murder of Sampat, however, the DPP withdrew the murder charge after reviewing the case. The Police had filed the murder charge without seeking the DPP’s advice.

The shooting incident took place back in August as a Police team was chasing a car with two men after they sped away from a party.

The Police opened fire on the car and both the driver and passenger were shot, with the passenger Cecil Sampat receiving fatal injuries.

The driver has been hospitalised with serious injuries.
