Police constable succumbs after stabbed by berserk fisherman

Hours after being stabbed by a berserk Fisherman, Constable Antonio Dawson succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital shortly after lunch on Friday.

‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken said the rank was one of the Force’s frontline crime fighters.

Dawson, who joined the force in 2013, was attached to the Impact Base. Police ranks and family members who were gathered at the hospital, were thrown into a state of despair upon learning of Dawson’s passing as their hopes of him recovering were dashed.

“It is unfortunate that this had to happen… he’s a very disciplined policeman and he is very brave. He is always on time and he is always on the front line,” Commander Hicken said.

Family members described Dawson as quiet and easy going.

According to police report, at about 09:45 Friday morning Dawson and other ranks were on a marine patrol in the Demerara River, when acting on information received, they went to the Houston Fishing Wharf, where they saw a man acting in a suspicious manner.

The ranks approached him and during an attempt to conduct a search, the man forcibly resisted and assaulted one of the police ranks.

He walked away and proceeded to an area in the vicinity of the Gafoors Complex where he was approached by ranks of a mobile police patrol who had responded to give assistance.

During efforts to arrest him, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed Dawson to his neck, chest and abdomen.

The man then proceeded to stab himself about his body and also slit his own throat. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.

Varying quantities of cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy were found in the man’s pants pockets and the weapon (knife) has been recovered by the police.

The body of the man who is of African descent, and is so far unidentified, is at the GPHC Mortuary. Investigations are in progress.
