Police delays charging 16-year-old with murder of Sophia boy; Suspect now likely to appear in Court on Friday

The prime suspect in the murder of the 10-year-old boy in Sophia during a home invasion and robbery was expected in Court today to face murder charges, but he was never taken to the Court.

Last evening, the Guyana Police Force announced that the teenager was going to be taken to Court today to face a murder charge. However, News Source understands that Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum decided to keep the teen in custody a bit longer as the investigation continues.

It is likely that the suspect will be charged on Friday since the extension the Police Force sought and got for detaining him, expires tomorrow.

The teen has been in custody since last Friday. There has been no other arrest in the case although the victims of the robbery and witnesses to the murder said there were two bandits who carried out the attack.

The 10-year-old boy and his mother were at the home of a Sophia businesswoman when the two armed men stormed into the house and robbed the occupants of their money and jewellery.

The young boy who was in the upper flat of the building throughout the robbery on the bottom flat, was shot to the chest as he emerged from a room as the bandits took their attack to the same upper flat.

The two bandits bolted from the scene, leaving the bleeding boy behind. The lad was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are continuing their search for the additional suspect.
