Police Detective stands by murder cover-up claims; Lawyers up with Nigel Hughes

Police Detective Dion Bascom is standing by his claims that there is a cover-up in the Police investigations into the murder of biker Ricardo Fagundes aka Paper Shorts.

The Police Detective has claimed major corruption in the investigation involving senior Police officers and a city businessman and his security agent.

Over the weekend, the Police Detective received letters threatening lawsuits from Police Superintendent Mitchell Caesar, businessman Azruddin Mohamed and security agent Mark Richmond.

The three who are being represented by the same law firm have denied the claims by the Police Detective and are all demanding an apology and retraction while threatening multi-million dollar lawsuits.

Bascom has now hired the services of prominent law firm, Hughes, Fields and Stoby which has since responded to the Poonai and Poonai Law Firm on behalf of Detective Bascom.

In the letter to the law firm representing the senior Police Officer, the businessman and his security agent, Attorney Nigel Hughes made it clear that his client Dion Bascom stands by his statements and will defend those statements in Court.

The Attorney indicated that Bascom has rejected the demands contained in letters dispatched to him and maintains that his statements are true in substance and in fact.

“We are instructed that your clients are no doubt aware that an investigation into the murder of Ricardo Fegundes was commenced by the Guyana Police Force which included a team of investigators including our client. During the course of the investigation material information was obtained which justified and continues to justify the statements made by our client. We are further instructed to inform, you as we hereby do, that two of your clients namely Mr. Azruddin Mohamed and Mr. Mark Anthony Richmond were persons of interest during the course of the investigation”, Hughes wrote on behalf of Caesar.

Mr. Hughes reminded that there were threats made against the life of Detective Bascom during the investigations into the murder of Ricardo Fagundes. He said it is a matter of record that threats were reported to Superintendent Caesar and a report was filed that the threats were made by security agent Mark Richmond

Hughes said if Caesar, Mohamed and Richmond contemplate the commencement of any of the proceedings contained in their letters, Bascom and his statements will be defended.

On Saturday, a defiant Detective Bascom took to his Facebook page to declare that he is standing by his story and that the three would have to file more lawsuits since he will continue to speak out about the alleged cover up of the murder and the alleged role played by the three.

Biker Ricardo Fagundes aka “Paper Shorts” who was a close associate of Roger Khan, was gunned down outside the Palm Court in March 2021.

His death remains unsolved and there are now calls for an independent Commission of Inquiry into the allegations made by the Police Detective against his supervising officers and the businessman and his security agent.

The detective claims that they were all part of a cover-up of the murder of Fagundes. He has indicated that he has information and evidence to support his position.

He has also indicated that he would be ready to present his position in a Court of law or before a Commission of Inquiry.
