Police Force confirms escape of Police Corporal fingered in AK-47 smuggling probe

The Guyana Police Force on Thursday confirmed that the Police Corporal at the centre of an AK-47 smuggling probe is on the run.

The Police officer has been identified as Shevon Marks. According to a statement from the Police Force, Corporal Marks was under confinement at the Brickdam Police Station “but has since escaped and all efforts are on stream to locate him”.

The Police Force said the case is not being treated any differently from other cases. The statement added that Marks was under close arrest for 72 hours but was later placed on open arrest and it was then that he escaped from custody.

The Police Force said the officer may have escaped since Sunday but Police Headquarters only became aware of the escape yesterday. The Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation.

The Policeman was arrested last week after a high powered AK-47 rifle was found hidden in a motor car that was about to be driven out of the Police Force’s Tactical Services Unit. The officer is believed to have been colluding with the driver of the car to smuggle the weapon out of the TSU headquarters.

Police sources have stated that based on initial tests, the weapon does not appear to be one that belongs to the Police Force.
