Police Force continues push back against cover-up claims by Police Sergeant

The Guyana Police Force continued its push back this evening against the claims made by Police Sergeant Dion Bascom about corruption in the Police Force and the alleged cover-up of the investigations into the murder of biker Ricardo Fagundes.

At a press conference at the Police Commissioner’s office, Acting Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken said the Police Force believes it is necessary to address and rebuke the claims from the Police Sergeant.

“It is a Sergeant of Police making these type of allegations and that is a senior subordinate officer and we thought it is necessary to do what we are doing here, call a press conference to clear it up”, Hicken said.

During the press conference, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum went through a number of claims made by the Police Sergeant to dispel the claims as false.

He singled out one of the statements made by Bascom that another officer was able to track the calls of one of the suspects in the Fagundes murder probe from outside the Palm Court using a laptop.

Mr. Blanhum said the Guyana Police Force is not in possession of any piece of equipment that could do such a job. He further stated that the Force has one IT specialist who has denied ever being in the presence of Bascom as part of the murder investigations.

Questioned about whether Police investigators might be using equipment or software that do not belong to the Force to track and triangulate phone calls, the Crime Chief said he is unaware of that, but repeated that the Force is not in possession of any such equipment.

Blanhum repeatedly stated that the statements made by Bascom are false. However, he noted that the Police Force is still awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions about how best to move forward with the case with regard to the statements that Bascom made.

The Police Sergeant who is on sick leave has repeatedly indicated that he intends to stick by his story.
