The Guyana Police Force, after two months has finally broken its silence on the complaint made by the Alliance For Change against the Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh about what the AFC considers “the illegal spending of some $4.5B”.

In a statement, the Police Force declared that based on legal advice, the issue would be an administrative breach of the law and not a criminal.

The disclosure was made in a letter addressed to Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan who had filed the complaint to the Guyana Police Force requesting immediate investigations be launched into the “illegal spending” by Singh of money that was not approved by the National Assembly.

In the letter to the AFC Leader, the Acting Commissioner of Police explained that “the Police Force is obligated to investigate criminal breaches only and does not conduct investigations into civil breaches nor administrative breaches of the Law, save and except those related to the Police (Discipline) Act Chapter 17:01 regarding the conduct of its ranks.”

He further stated that the Police Force is of the opinion that the section of Law that Ramjattan alleged was breached by the Minister addresses administrative issues and is therefore an administrative breach. As such, he said that it is on that basis that the Police Force is seeking legal advice on the matter.
