Police gets breathalyzer gift from flour company

Less than two weeks after Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee admitted that the Police Force only had three functioning breathalyzer kits to test suspected drunk drivers, the National Milling Company has stepped forward to offer some help.

On Tuesday, NAMILCO donated fifteen breathalyzer kits to Guyana Police Force to aid in the efforts to curb drunk driving on the roadways.

According to a Police statement, the Managing Director of NAMILCO, Roopnarine Sukhai, in making the presentation to the Police Force noted that he was motivated to assist the Force with the equipment after he was involved in a vehicular accident and there was no Breathalyzer available at the station during the investigation.

He expressed the willingness of the Company to assist with having the equipment recalibrated annually through the suppliers.

Commissioner Leroy Brumell, in response expressed gratitude for the timely gesture by NAMILCO which he said will assist meaningfully in traffic enforcement and the Police Force’s efforts in maintaining road safety.
The revelation that the Guyana Police Force only had three working breathalyzer kits in the entire country came as an embarrassment for the Force which has been lamenting the problem of drunk driving in the country and its efforts to step up more monitoring of suspected drunk drivers.
