Police officer remanded to jail over unlicensed weapon and ammunition

A serving member of the Guyana Police Force was today remanded to prison after he was caught with a 9mm firearm and ammunition without being the holder of a firearm license.

The bust was made on the route 44 bus park recently, while the policeman was off-duty. 

The policeman, Kwasi Moloney, made his first appearance before a City Magistrate and denied the allegations against him.

It was alleged that on the 12th October, at the 44 Route Bus Park, young officer was found with a 9mm firearm along with 19 live rounds and a spent shell casing.

It was further alleged that on the day in question, the man also escaped lawful custody, while being under investigation for the possession of gun and ammunition.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail and stated that on the day in question, the accused was at the park when a search was conducted on him and the items mentioned in the charge were found on him.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the case, the Magistrate remanded Maloney to prison until the 30th October.
