Members of the Guyana Police Force will be receiving the equivalent of two weeks of their monthly salary as an end of year bonus.

The announcement was made this morning by President Irfaan Ali as he attended the Police Commissioner’s Breakfast event.

The President used the event to encourage senior officers to lead the way in professional conduct in the Force.

He said he believes that the professional conduct of lawmen will result in improvements with members of the public.

“For you who serve in the police force, professionalism is the embodiment of everything you do. And I’m not asking for anything beyond that, beyond that professionalism that would see a remarkable improvement in the way the population views you, views your uniform, and the Government.”

The President told the senior officers that his government will be rolling out a number of programmes and initiatives to support growth and development in the Police Force.

 “We expect to see marked improvement in performance. A lot of professionals believe that we should go on a case outcome basis for incentives in the police force, similar to a production incentive in all the industries. I don’t believe this to be the only way forward. Because we must never give the impression that our only driving force to resolve a case is incentives and rewards.”

Mr. Ali also announced that a special housing programme will be unveiled to cater to members of the Police Force.

 “Part of our programme to ensure we enhance the welfare of not only the senior officers, but all ranks, is to ensure that we work on a special housing programme that will not only see ranks having access to house lots but to ensure that we help them to qualify so that they can get loans and grants to build their homes. These are important things that add to the performance, that adds to job satisfaction.”

Acting Police Commissioner Nigel Hoppie told the President that the Guyana Police Force remains committed to fulfilling its mandate. He said despite the challenges that members of the Force face from time to time, improving professionalism and enhancing public trust remain critical areas for the Force.
