More than nine months after more than $400 million worth of raw gold was stolen from a Mahaica businesswoman, the Major Crimes Unit of the Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation.

Two persons were charged today in connection with the heist.

In a statement this afternoon, the Police Force confirmed the arrest of a number of persons including two Police officers. However, charges were laid against only two of the suspects.

Appearing in Court today were 49-year-old contractor Bhaloonauth Seegobin called ‘Krishna’, and 24-year-old construction worker Satrohan Seegobin caled ‘Richie’.

The two were jointly charged for the theft of 1000 ounces of raw gold valued at $400 million.

The 24-year-old contraction worker pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to four years in jail. His boss, Bhaloonauth Seegobin pleaded not guilty and was remanded to jail until the 1st November.

The Police statement said the two men were hired by the businesswoman back in December 2021 to carry out repair works at her home. The woman reportedly stores raw gold from business transactions at the same house.

It is believed that when the men were carrying out repair works to the home, they stumbled upon the large quantity of raw gold and removed it from the house.

The Police said the two went on a spending spree after they were able to sell some of the gold.

Although the incident took place since December, the unnamed businesswoman only filed a Police complaint last Friday, triggering a major investigation.

The Police said its investigators have been able to recover a quantity of the stolen gold and have also seized two cars and a canter truck that were allegedly bought by the two men after the heist.

A gold dealer in Georgetown reportedly purchased a large quantity of the stolen gold, unaware that it had been stolen.

Late this afternoon, the Police said another suspect has since been arrested. Investigators were able to seize two motor cars and $6 million from the latest suspect.

The investigations are ongoing.
