The British High Commissioner to Guyana is urging the political leadership of the country to get together and agree to a constitutional way forward, following the no confidence vote.

Speaking at a meeting of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce yesterday, High Commissioner Greg Quinn said “it is imperative for the two political sides to meet and agree to a way forward”.

He said if no way forward is found, he fears there will be a further and more harmful impact on business and investment in Guyana and no one wants that, he added.

According to the High Commissioner, “all political parties have a responsibility to act honestly and truthfully and to act for the betterment of every citizen – not their own pockets or to their own narrow interests”.

Politicians, he said, need to put the people first.

The High Commissioner added that Voters also have a responsibility and that is   To hold their elected officials to account for what they have done or are doing.

March 21 marks three months since the passage of the no-confidence motion. Under the Constitution, elections should be called within 90 days of the passage of the motion or at a time agreed to by two-thirds of the National Assembly.

High Commissioner Quinn said the clock is ticking following the no confidence vote in December and while he recognises that a legal process is ongoing, he also recognises that the clock has not been stayed.

The Elections Commission stated more than a month ago that it was impossible for elections to be held within 90 days. In one of several scenarios for early elections, the Commission’s secretariat reported that the earliest possible timeline it could deliver elections would be in July.

The political parties have not returned to the National Assembly to extend the date for the elections as yet.
