Port Kaituma man killed by son-in-law after going to daughter’s aid

Police at Port Kaituma in the North West District have arrested a 36-year-old man over the death of his father-in-law.

The dead man has been identified as 67-year-old farmer, Dennis Williams. He was killed yesterday morning as his daughter’s husband used his engine powered boat to ram into a small boat that he was in.

Police investigators reported that the incident stemmed from an earlier altercation between the suspect and his wife.

Reports have revealed that the suspect and two of his friends were consuming alcohol early on Saturday morning and the suspect invited the friends to sleep over. During the course of the morning, the man’s wife ventured out to use the washroom. She was accused by her husband of wanting to see his friends.  The man started to beat on the woman and as she started screaming, her father who lived just across the river in the area, got into his boat and rushed to his daughter’s aid.

He saved her from the abusive husband and remained with her until daybreak. As the father was making his way back across the river at the crack of dawn, the son in law, hopped into his engine powered boat and slammed into the elderly man as he paddled across the river.

The man fell overboard and was submerged. His body was later recovered with multiple injuries to the head.

Police were called to the scene and arrested the son-in-law who used his boat as a deadly weapon. An investigation has been launched.
