While it is pleased with the decision by the Guyana Elections Commission to bring an early end to the house-to-house registration exercise, the opposition People’s Progressive Party is not happy that the data garnered during house to house registration will be merged with the existing National Register of Registrants.

In a statement this evening, the PPP said “the planned merger of data from the house-to-house registration will not improve the quality or ‘credibility’ of the database – rather it will further contaminate the National Register of Registrants and cause further delays in the holding of Elections”.

The party is urging the Commission to move decisively by immediately launching a Claims and Objections period.

The PPP nominated Commissioners on the Guyana Elections Commission have also voiced dissatisfaction with the decision to use data from the house to house registration and merge it with the existing National Register of Registrants.

According to Commissioner Robeson Benn “We have said that any merging or verification of the data by using House to House information is wrong, it will take a long time and it will contaminate the NRR (National Register of Registrants). It will because it will result based on 285,000 persons who have been just registered, they will appear as duplicates and having appeared as duplicates, all of those will have to be investigated”.

GECOM in its statement said it plans to begin an extensive Claims and Objections period. But it offered no timeline for that period.

The decision to end the house-to-house registration while keeping its data for the new list was made solely by the GECOM Chair, retired Justice Claudette Singh.

The governing APNU+AFC coalition has welcomed the decision of the Guyana Elections Commission and has indicated that it will respect and abide by the decision.
