Hours after issuing a statement to the media declaring his innocence, Executive Member of the People’s Progressive Party and former Member of Parliament, Alistair Charlie got the opportunity to declare the same innocence in Court.

He appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus this afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the charges of sexual assault of a teenage boy and perverting the course of justice.

Mr. Charlie, who was the PPP’s Member of Parliament for the Rupununi region in the last parliament, is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy between the 31st July and the 1st August 2019 at Lethem in Region 9.

He is also accused of perverting the course of justice on the 5th August in the same town of Lethem.

Particulars of the case accuse the former MP of allegedly exposing his private parts to the teenager and touching the teen’s private parts after the two allegedly went drinking at a bar following a sweet 16 birthday party for a relative of the accused in the same Lethem community.

The incident was reportedly captured on camera and a report was made to the Police by a relative of the young boy. Charlie was arrested as an investigation started and advice was sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He is being represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat and was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 today.

The politician has repeatedly denied the accusations and has said that he believes that the accusations and charges are politically motivated.
