PPP has nothing to fear from Elections 2020 Commission of Inquiry -says Jagdeo

With the Government planning to move ahead with a Commission of Inquiry into the 2020 Elections, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo declared this afternoon that his party, the People’s Progressive Party is not fearful of any such inquiry.

“The PPP has nothing to fear from a Commission of Inquiry. We believe that the Commission of Inquiry will that APNU as we all know, sought to steal the elections. And this Commission of Inquiry shall be very uncomfortable for the same people who have been calling for an internal review”, Mr. Jagdeo said at an afternoon press conference.

The Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission ruled recently against conducting an internal review of the 2020 elections and the shortcomings of the Elections Commission and other related issues.

The Opposition nominated members of the Elections Commission were pushing for the internal probe.

Last week, President Irfaan Ali announced his decision to proceed with the International Commission of Inquiry into the 2020 elections. He had promised to convene the CoI during his inauguration speech to the nation in 2020.

Today, Vice President Jagdeo said “many times the Opposition misunderstand our desire to move forward as a country as somehow of a weakness. And that we are consciously moving forward and ignoring a lot of things because we just want to remain positive and move the country ahead and address the task at hand”.

The Vice President slapped down claims that the PPP was involved in any attempts to change the outcome of the elections. He said all of the commentators who have been making those statements will get the chance to provide the evidence to the Commission of Inquiry.
