The opposition People’s Progressive Party has announced that its Members of Parliament will not be accepting the salary increases as approved by the government.

In a statement last evening, the PPP which holds the minority in the National Assembly, also announced that it intends to move a motion in the House seeking to reverse the salary increases for government ministers and all members of parliament.

Additionally the PPP wants to move a motion for all government ministers and Members of Parliament to publicly declare their tax returns over the past years.

According to the PPP, “a motion shall be laid in the National Assembly seeking to annul the unconscionable and astronomical salary increases that the APNUAFC Cabinet gave to themselves.”

The party added that a meeting of its Members of Parliament, it was also decided that the party will also table a motion calling on all MPs to make public their tax returns to the GRA over the last 10 years.

The PPP which spent 23 years in government never made any such declaration during that time and never sought such a declaration although it held the majority in the parliament for 20 of those 23 years.

The government has been coming under criticism for the salary increases from all quarters including some of the trade unions who believe that the increases which range from 10 to 50 percent are just too soon.

The government has defended the move by saying it is an investment in quality.
