PPP “not-cooperating” with house-to-house registration; Plans to seek an injunction to stop it

Opposition Leader and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that his party will not be co-operating with the house-to-house registration exercise which started on Saturday.

Mr. Jagdeo claims that the exercise is “illegal” and is in contravention of the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

During a media statement on Saturday, the Opposition Leader said his party will move to the Court on Monday in an effort to get an injunction to block the house-to-house registration process from continuing.

“We will go to the Courts to seek an injunction against this illegal activity which is being done in contravention of the order of the CCJ. So we will not be co-operating with this activity over this weekend”, he assured.

The CCJ in its consequential orders following its validation of the no-confidence motion said the provisions of the constitution on the passage of the motion would have become engaged.

Those provisions point to the holding of elections within three months or at a later time as agreed to by two-thirds of the National Assembly.

The PPP has been pressing for elections within three months and has indicated that it will not be going back to Parliament to give the government the two-thirds agreement that would be needed for an extension.

The CCJ stayed clear of setting a definite election timeline although it was requested by the Attorneys for the Leader of the Opposition.

Mr. Jagdeo believes that the Guyana Elections Commission is moving ahead with the house-to-house process registration process although it was signed off by a Chairman who is no longer there and whose appointment was declared as flawed by the CCJ.

While declaring the process to appoint the former Chairman as flawed, the CCJ did not void any of his actions as Chairman and there were no requests for such a move during the Court hearings.

The Elections Commission has said that while the house-to-house process is ongoing, it will continue other preparations for the hosting of elections.
