PPP Parliamentarians to donate salary increases to the party

After strongly criticizing the government over the salary increases given to government ministers and all members of parliament and declaring that the PPP parliamentarians will reject the increases, the party has now decided that those same parliamentarians should in fact donate the increases to the party.

The PPP had first said it was going to donate the increases to charity. In a statement issued by the party, it appears as though charity really begins at home.

The party said it established a bank account since 1976 to facilitate People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Members of Parliament making part of their Parliamentary salary available as a donation to the Party.

According to the party, PPP Members of Parliament have been making the donations  on a voluntary basis for years.

But now with the recent salary increase granted to PPP Members of Parliament, “the Party took a decision that its current Members of Parliament will not be accepting the increases. All PPP Members of Parliament were therefore obliged to take steps in keeping with the established practice and based on the recent Party’s decision concerning the salary increases.”

Many of the PPP parliamentarians have seen a 19% increase in their salaries. The Opposition Leader’s salary was increased by 50%, but he has opted to take his pension as former President over the Opposition Leader’s salary. The pension is much higher.
