The Opposition People’s Progressive Party has started to finalize its list of Parliamentarians to occupy the 32 seats it won at the May 11 elections. But PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee said he could not confirm if some of the leading members, including former Presidents Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald
Ramotar will make the final list.
According to its General Secretary Clement Rohee, the Central and Executive Committees of the Party are yet to come to a decision on whether its members will physically occupy those seats when the Parliament is convened by President David Granger.
“We do not follow that in choosing your MPs and so forth that you will go into the Parliament right away, remember there have been periods in our history where we settled on our Parliamentarians but did not go
into Parliament,” Rohee added.
The PPP continues to allege fraud in the tabulation of results and is regarding the APNU+AFC coalition as a “de-facto” government.
Rohee said a preliminary list has already been developed and the party will begin its consultative process today to finalize the names and ensure that all members are in agreement as far as possible.
He said the party is still looking at all of the candidates and examining them before making the final decision on who goes to parliament.
Only last week, Chargé d’ Affaires of the U.S Embassy here in Georgetown Bryan Hunt urged the PPP to take up its seats in Parliament and represent APNU+AFC government to strongly consider inclusionary
governance in light of its slim majority win.
The American, British and Canadian governments along with several observer missions, including the Carter Center have said the elections were free, fair and credible. A conclusion the PPP continues to reject with weekly protest calling for a recount and the resignation of the Guyana Elections Commission Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally.
