PPP to stay away from Parliament unless elections being discussed

According to Jagdeo, "the Parliament cannot go on as if nothing happened. The Government fell and this was certified by the Speaker, who is the head of the legislature, he announced in unambiguous terms that the motion of no confidence was successful. The Clerk certified that and notified me and he said he is not doing a review of that. As far as the three branches of government is concerned, the legislative branch has made a decision and that has to be respected. The consequence of that decision is that the Government should resign."

PPP to stay away from Parliament unless elections being discussed

When the National Assembly reconvenes next Thursday, the Opposition is likely to be absent.

That’s according to the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, who told reporters this afternoon that the PPP will not be attending any other Parliamentary sitting unless the Assembly is meeting to discuss preparations for elections.

“I have made it clear that the People’s Progressive Party will not go back to the National Assembly excepting for the purpose, any purpose relating to the conduct of elections. No other business”, the Opposition Leader said.

Mr. Jagdeo is of the opinion that the Government should resign and take on a caretaker role as the country prepares for elections in ninety days.

This afternoon he met with representatives of the American, British, Canadian and European Union missions in Guyana and also told them that he believes the Government ought to resign from office at this stage.

He said the government is throwing away any possibility of goodwill between itself and the opposition with all the talk about possible moves to the Court to reverse the decision of the National Assembly. “We will not accept a judicial coup”, Jagdeo said.

The Opposition Leader said he believes once the Parliament meets to deal with legislative issues, it would be doing so illegall.

According to Jagdeo, “the Parliament cannot go on as if nothing happened. The consequence of that decision is that the Government should resign.”

He said the Government should not be returning to the National Assembly, as if nothing has happened.

“You now are there in a caretaker responsibility”, he said.
