President David Granger has invited Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to meet with him after Monday’s consequential orders by the Caribbean Court of Justice on the way forward following its rulings on the no-confidence motion and the appointment of a GECOM Chairman.

In the letter sent to Mr. Jagdeo by the Director General at the Ministry of the Presidency, Joe Harmon, it was stated that the President wants to discuss the current political situation in Guyana “resulting from the decision of the Caribbean Court of Justice”.

In its rulings last Tuesday, the CCJ validated the no-confidence motion against the Guyana Government and also ruled that the President’s 2017 appointment of a GECOM Chairman was flawed.

CCJ President, Justice Adrian Saunders has set Monday as the day for consequential orders to be made.

The Opposition wants the CCJ to order the appointment of a new GECOM Chairman, the resignation of the Cabinet and the calling of elections within three months.

The Government has been pressing for house-to-house registration to be completed before elections since it believes there is a possibility that thousands could be left disenfranchised if elections were to proceed with the recently expired voters list.

President David Granger has described that list as corrupt and said he wants the elections to be free, fair and credible and he will remain committed to that.

The Opposition Leader believes the list could work without house-to-house registration.

The Elections Commission has already been approved funding by the Government for the conduct of house-to-house registration as well as funding for the hosting of elections.
