President and Opposition Leader to meet again “soon” on GECOM Chair

In a statement last evening, Mr. Harmon said the two sides have been in touch with each other and the President and the Leader of the Opposition are to meet soon on the issue.

President and Opposition Leader to meet again “soon” on GECOM Chair

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon has indicated that there has been no discontinuing of the meetings between the government and opposition over the appointment of a Chairman of the Elections Commission.

In a statement last evening, Mr. Harmon said the two sides have been in touch with each other and the President and the Leader of the Opposition are to meet soon on the issue.

Harmon’s statements came in response to a letter to the press by opposition member Gail Teixeira who complained that there has been no meeting for almost a week.

According to the Director-General, “Talks were never broken off and Both sides have been in touch since the last meeting.

He said over the past three weeks, there have been four meetings between the representatives of the President and the Leader of the Opposition and two meetings between President and Opposition Leader themselves.

The two sides are still in the process of hammering out nominees before a formal list is submitted to the president for his consideration.
