President announces renaming of Waramadong Secondary in honour of late PPP Minister

The Waramadong Secondary School is to be renamed after late Education Minister under People’s Progressive Party, Dr. Desrey Fox, President David Granger announced on Tuesday.

The Head of State was at the time addressing his inaugural National Toshaos Conference (NTC) where he pledged greater support for hinterland development and indigenous communities as he laid out a 10 point plan of action to guide his vision.

The late Dr. Fox was born at Waramadong Village, Upper Mazaruni District and entered the PPP administration following the 2006 elections where she used her influence to push for the overall development of indigenous communities.

President’s Granger’s announcement was welcomed with loud applause by the scores of Amerindians and government officials present. The Government recently announced that it will also name an Education Award after Desrey Fox for the Most Outstanding Hinterland student.

Of top priority in the President’s plan of action, is a focus on education.

“The hinterland must not be regarded as the bush, they are part of the nation of Guyana,” Granger implored, as he called on those present to “let us today sit down and craft a common agenda as to how our hinterland and coastal land can be developed together”.

President Granger said it is his government’s intention to un-shackle all Guyanese from dependency and proposed to work together for the improvement of the quality of life for all indigenous Guyanese. “…we desire to see development with dignity not with dependency,” the President said as he laid out a 10-point plan of action for indigenous communities.

The President’s vision of development was backed by his Minister of Indigenous People’s Affairs and Vice President Sydney Allicock. It is his fervent hope that the new government’s plans and programs will yield positive results that all of Guyana can be proud of.

“We believe that you have the capabilities… continue to be steadfast, rejecting attempts to be intimidated and divide. We cannot allow ill intentioned politicians to continue to divide us,” he said.

The Minister announced that the Amerindian land titling project will commence on September 1.
