President defends actions in Charrandas Persaud issue

President Irfaan Ali today defended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his own handling of the Charrandass Persaud issue and his decision to recall him as High Commissioner to India.

Speaking to reporters this morning, the President said he acted once he saw the video evidence of Persaud cursing out a female Indian professor outside his official residence in India.

The President while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was aware of the incident, its decision to declare the matter a closed one was made before the video evidence surfaced. He said the decision was also based on the information from the Indian authorities that the complaint could not be substantiated.

Two days ago, the President announced the recall of the High Commissioner, stating that Charrandas Pesaud has agreed to return home from his diplomatic posting.

It is unclear whether Persaud who is a also a resident of Canada has left India. President Ali today said that he has not decided on a replacement although interest has been flowing into him.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has been accused of a cover-up of the issue, since it took place over a year ago and there was no action on the part of the Foreign Ministry although it was made aware of the incident.

Several women rights activist in Guyana have said Charrandas Persaud should not remain in the employ of the Government over his “disgusting” verbal assault of the woman in India.
