Hours after Donald Trump was declared the winner of the Tuesday’s U.S elections, Guyana’s President David Granger offered congratulations and indicated that he is looking forward to working with the Trump administration.

In a brief interview with reporters at State House, President Granger said the U.S elections were conducted in a transparent manner and it is now an issue for the american people and Guyana will respect the democratic choice of the american people.

“This is a matter for the American people. America is a democratic country and the elections were conducted in a transparent manner. I think there is no country in the world that is not aware of what was happening over the last six months, so even if some Guyanese had to vote, they were fully aware of the programme of the two major candidates”, President Granger said.

The President also said his government looks forward to working with the incoming US government especially in the area of security of the hemisphere.

The United States plays a key role in hemispheric security in this part of the world and over the years, the US government has provided billions to Guyana and other Caribbean governments in the area of security.

Mr. Granger said he is confident that the relationship between the US and the countries in this hemisphere will not diminish.

The US Ambassador to Guyana earlier this week said that there will be no changes in the relations between Guyana and the US regardless of the outcome of the elections. Guyana and the US have had good relations for fifty years.

Donald Trump pulled off an upset victory in yesterday’s US Elections, sending shockwaves around the world as he trumped Hillary Clinton in the race for The White House.

Clinton was the favoured candidate, according to a number of polls but although she won the popular vote, it was Trump who reached the 270 electoral number needed to win the elections.
