President set to name election date soon; Opposition Leader still against November timeline

President set to name election date soon; Opposition Leader still against November timeline

President David Granger, through State Minister Joe Harmon, has informed Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo of his intention to name a date for elections soon.

In a letter which was dispatched to Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo by the Minister of State on Wednesday, Mr. Harmon informed the Opposition Leader that “the President intends to shortly name a date for General and Regional Elections in Guyana within the framework provided by the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission”.

The GECOM Chairman informed the President earlier this week that once it is provided with all the necessary funding and completes all of the processes for the elections, including house-to-house registration, the Commission would be in a position to host elections by late November.

But Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo remains against the November timeline. At his press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Jagdeo said a date in May could now be looked at.

In a response to the Minister of State’s letter, Jagdeo said he has already made known his position against the November timeline and the President ought to be reminded that after midnight tonight, “his government becomes illegal”.

President David Granger is currently in Cuba and is set to return to Guyana this weekend.

The Government of Guyana has warned the Opposition Leader about his “false” narrative that the Government becomes illegal after March 21.

A no-confidence motion was passed against the Government in December, triggering elections within 90 days or at a time agreed to by two-thirds of the National Assembly.

With the 90 day period expiring tonight, the National Assembly is still to meet on extending the time.
