As Guyana celebrates its 54th Independence anniversary today, President David Granger is reminding citizens that Guyana is a sovereign state “that established diplomatic relations on the principles of mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, respect for treaties and international law and the rejection of the use of force to settle international disputes”. 

In the past few months, Guyana has faced threats of sanctions from the US over the election results. 

A recount process is currently ongoing and President Granger in his independence address urged citizens to await the declaration of the results of the General and Regional Elections which were held on 2nd March. 

The President said the Elections Commission, which is the sole authority charged with administering the elections in accordance with the Constitution, has responded in an orderly and lawful manner to the challenges which have arisen.

President David Granger also used his address to the nation to encourage citizens to be mindful of the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic and to be restrained in observing the country’s independence anniversary as public celebrations are still not permitted under the current health emergency measures. 

The Golden Arrowhead was hoisted at midnight at Durban Park with no audience or traditional pomp and ceremony.

Masked officers of the Guyana Defense Force, quietly raised the nation’s flag as the country continues its fight against the coronavirus.
