President David Granger has written to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission requesting that the Commission presents him with a work programme in the shortest possible time.

In a letter to Justice James Patterson this morning, the President said it is essential that he is informed of the Commission’s readiness to deliver credible elections in Guyana.

“I urge you to present your plans, programmes and financial needs which will guide my proclamation of a suitable date for elections,” the President wrote.

Last week, the President held consultations with the Elections Commission. At the end of the meeting, President Granger said the Elections Commission did not provide him with the guidance needed for him to proclaim a date for hosting credible elections.

He has also held consultations with the Opposition Leader on two occasions since the passage of the no-confidence motion.

President Granger has repeatedly said that the Government of Guyana will not interfere or intrude in the work of the Commission.

He said the Commission is independent and it is not for anybody to give the Commission instructions as to when elections are to be held.
