Princes Street fire leaves four homeless

An early afternoon fire which gutted the top flat of a Princes Street house has left four persons homeless.

According to Divisional Commander of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), Compton Sparman, the fire department received a call at about 2:45 on Sunday afternoon about the fire at lot 1515 Princes St Wortmanville.

He said that within minutes, two fire trucks, one from West Ruimveldt and the other from Central fire station reported to the location and were able to contain the fire.

However, by then, the entire top flat of the house had been gutted.

The Divisional Commander was unable to make a pronouncement on the cause of the fire, but said that neighbours and occupants of the premise will soon be questioned as investigations continue.

One of the occupants of the house,  Sandra Christie, explained that four persons reside at the location, but she was the only one at home at the time.

She said that she was in the bottom flat, where she operates a hairdressing salon, and was alerted about the fire by neighbours.

Some neighbours who were on the scene claimed that the fire originated from the kitchen area.
