Prison escapee recaptured at hospital with knife stuck in neck

A prison escapee who was on the run for over a year was recaptured yesterday morning after he turned up at a hospital in Mahdia seeking medical help with a knife stuck in his neck.

The prisoner, 27-year-old Samuel Gouveia is a manslaughter convict who was serving an 18-year jail sentence when he managed to escape from the Mazaruni prison.

He has reportedly been hiding out in the Region 8 area.

According to a Police report, at around 4:30 on Tuesday morning, Gouveia showed up at the Mahdia District Hospital and was recognised. Police and Prison officials were contacted and he was positively identified as the prison escapee.

He reported to the Police that he was stabbed to the neck by another man during an argument over money in the same Region 8 area late on Monday night.

Gouveia remains hospitalised and is now under Police guard.
