Prison officers to be trained at Police Academy from this year

As the Government of Guyana seeks news ways to strengthen and improve the prison system following the March 3rd prison unrest, new Prison Officers will now undergo training at the Police Academy.

The move seeks to ensure better trained prison officers who can respond better to any challenging situation.

During a recent interview at the Ministry of the Presidency, President Granger also announced that the Government will continue to move prisoners out of the Camp Street jail to other locations even as there will be the expansion of the Mazaruni prison.

But he noted that there will still be added attention being paid to the training of prison officers.

“Starting this year, Prison Officers will be trained in the Police Academy and so we expect that will raise their level of competence and the number of Prison Officers will be augmented so that Mazaruni will have a larger corp of Prison Officers and we are also going to build a team of Prison Officers who will be able to respond to incidents like the one which occurred on the 3rd March”, President Granger said.

He also noted that he wants to see the Prison Service being able to respond to situations in a better manner and not have to depend on the support of the Military or the Police.

Last week, the Chairman of the Prison Unrest Commission of Inquiry handed in their report with findings and recommendations to the President.

Among the recommendations is for there to be immediate steps to ease the overpopulation in the Georgetown Prison.

The Commission was formed following the deadly prison unrest back in March which claimed 17 lives.  It was the deadliest prison riot in Guyana’s history.
