Private Sector Commission standing costs for repainting of State House

The official residence of Guyana’s President is being repainted to its original colour of white and the Private Sector Commission is standing the cost, according to President Irfaan Ali.

While the President did not offer any details of the repainting plan and the agreement with the Private Sector Commission to cover the cost, he made it clear that no state funds will be used for the repainting exercise.

The historical building and heritage site was painted in two shades of green by former President David Granger in 2017 as he insisted that he was not breaking any laws with the repainting of the heritage building.

However, the National Trust of Guyana wrote to Mr. Granger indicating its concern over the repainting without any consultation with the Trust as is required.

The Office of the President was also repainted in two shades of green under the former Government. While green is the dominant colour associated with the APNU+AFC coalition, Mr. Granger at the time brushed aside concerns even as he came under some criticism for the change of the colour that existed for decades during various governments.

President Ali in a statement yesterday while colours do not matter to him, national institutions do, so he welcomed the Private Sector Commission’s decision to repaint the official residence of the President.
