Probe underway into fiery protest at Camp Street jail

The Fire Service was called out on Wednesday evening to the Camp Street jail after prisoners set fire to a small section of the building.

Quick action by the fire service contained the blaze.

The prisoners were protesting a reported move by the prison authorities to put a hold on the system that allowed their relatives to provide food for some of the inmates.

Many of the prisoners shouted from within the camp street jail with their protest.  They said they were being denied their rights and  wanted the authorities to address many of their concerns.

Some of them also complained about the long wait for their trials to begin.

News Source understands that many of the prisoners may have also been upset with the random searches that would be carried out by the prison authorities and the seizing of illegal items.

A probe into last evening’s fire is underway.
