Process to select new GECOM Chairman set to begin; Opposition Leader invited to submit nominees

With the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Dr. Steve Surujbally set to leave the job at the end of this month, President David Granger has indicated to the Opposition Leader that the process to find a new Chairman should start.

Mr. Jagdeo will have to submit six nominees for the position and the President will have to pick one of the nominees for the post. If the President does not find favour with any of the nominees, the Opposition Leader will have to submit a new list.

State Minister Joe Harmon, has indicated that last week he received a letter from Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, about the processs.  He said the President responded directly to the Opposition Leader indicating his readiness for the process to begin.

News Source understands that Mr. Jagdeo and senior members of his party, have been considering several prominent persons for the position.  He has not given any indication of his possible nominees.

In a letter to the President and the Opposition Leader earlier this year, Dr. Surujbally indicated that he would be leaving the post at the end of November.

He became Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission 15 years ago.  The PPP had strongly crticise him for his management of the 2015 elections, although all of the international observers praised the elections as free, fair and credible.
