Psychiatrist finds Captain Sandy “fit to stand trial” for reputed wife’s murder

Psychiatrist, Dr. Bhiro Harry has ruled that Guyana Defence Force Officer, Captain Orwain Sandy, is fit to stand trial for his reputed wife’s murder.

Sandy’s Attorney had requested a psychiatric report after the man was charged for gunning down his wife on April 1, 2018. That evaluation was recently completed and the Psychiatrist has  handed over that report to the Court.

News Source understands that in the report, the Psychiatrist pointed out that the military officer was quiet and cooperative throughout the evaluation, although tearful in many instances.

News Source has also learnt that the Psychiatrist pointed out that he responded to questions in a clear and coherent manner.

According to sources familiar with the report, it was also pointed out in the report that Sandy referred to having suffered from nervous problems as a child, but has no history of any mental issue and had never received any treatment for any mental disorder.

He answered several questions about the murder and reportedly claimed that “a force” was responsible for it, while admitting that he sometimes does things on sudden impulse.

Dr. Harry found that the man had no psychotic manifestations during the session and is therefore fit to stand trial. He understood why he was charged and also understands the consequences of a trial in the Court.

With the medical evaluation now handed over to the Court, the case is expected to move forward at the preliminary inquiry stage.

Sandy is being represented by Attorney James Bond. In Court today, the Attorney requested that his legal team be given time to examine the medical report. When Sandy was first charged, Bond had also made it known that he wanted an independent psychiatric evaluation of the officer.

The shooting death of travel agent, Reona Payne, sent shockwaves across the country. The woman was gunned down in a street in Alexander village with several eyewitnesses around. She was shot fourteen times to the body, including once to the head.

Just after the shooting, Sandy drove himself to a Police station and surrendered. He also handed over the murder weapon, which was a gun that had been issued to him by the military.

The two had reportedly been experiencing turbulent times in their relationship and the woman had complained to friends about him being abusive towards her.
