Ramjattan’s “Party Done” decree set to be enforced this weekend

Despite a push back from entertainment promoters and nightclub operators, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan is pushing forward with his decree to close off nightclubs and bars by 2am.

During a media interaction on Friday, Ramjattan said a lot of businesses which operate late into the nights have been asked to wrap up those operations when the clock strikes 2 in the morning.

The Minister believes that the move could see the decline of road accidents and also a drop in violent crimes, although he is yet to provide any evidence that criminal activities would be at their peak between the hours of 2am and 6am. .

Many night club owners and promoters have described the move by Ramjattan as backward and they have called on him to rethink the position.

One nightclub promoter told News Source that “we would understand if there is a close off time for selling alcohol, we have no problem with that. But to come and demand that we shut our business place down or shut our event down at a certain time is just ridiculous and the Minister needs to rethink this backward policy”.

The argument being made by the club owners and promoters is that most patrons come out to “celebrate and have fun” after midnight and the move to “shut shop” by 2am could be detrimental to their businesses.

Ramjattan said he wants to tackle late night drinking and would like to see Guyanese spend their money in a better way.

He said “And those who drink at around that time already doing  pretty heavy binges, spending monies that could have been spent more wisely and it has a direct effect on the number of traffic offenses we have and on work ethic. When you drink too late you can’t get up early to go to work. And even if you do, you are not working as efficiently as you ought to and so drinking at those hours have a impact on the economy.”
