Former executive member of the People’s Progressive Party, Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran has issued a call for the incumbent to concede that it lost the elections and move on in cooperation with the development of the country.
In a post on his Facebook page, Mr. Ramkarran who also served as the Speaker of the National Assembly said “its official as announced by GECOM: APNU – 206,817; PPP 201457. Close race as predicted by many. The PPP should behave with some dignity, concede, telephone David Granger and offer congratulations, and offer their cooperation for the development for the country”.
President Donald Ramotar has declared that he will not concede that he lost the elections and he wants a recount of every ballot that was cast.
At a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Ramotar said the elections were not free and fair and he accused the elections commission of working along with the winning APNU+AFC coalition.
As results trickled in, the PPP had requested recounts in all 10 districts. The Returning officers for only two of those districts agreed to the recount while the remaining eight Returning Officers did not approve.
But even as the President is refusing to concede, many of his supporters and some candidates on his party’s list have indicated that it is time to move forward.
Candidate for the PPP and businessman Clinton Urling wrote on his Facebook page that “Gecom and the people have spoken….congrats to the victors….the PPP will remain a strong party in the years to come”.
