Ramotar and Harper express confidence and hope as official elections results trickle in

The Freedom House headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party had very little buzz on Tuesday afternoon as President Donald Ramotar called a press conference with his Prime Ministerial Candidate Elisabeth Harper at his side along with national candidate, Dr. Frank Anthony.

Freedom House is usually a hive of activity during election time. A few party supporters gathered in the lobby while drivers and security agents stood outside.

The president told media operatives that it was “irresponsible” of the APNU+AFC coalition to announce that it had a commanding lead that could not be overtaken by the PPP Civic.  The President released his own figures and said that it was his party that had the commanding lead.

Ramotar said he would not claim victory at this stage but he is convinced that his party was able to win in at least 6 of the 10 administrative regions.

He said based on the statements of polls that it had gathered, it was leading by over 30,000 votes. When asked if those statements included all of Region 4 which is the largest voting region and a stronghold of the APNU+AFC coalition, the President said, there were still outstanding statements from Georgetown to be tabulated.

But even as he expressed confidence in remaining in office, Mr. Ramotar and his running mate appeared tired and dejected. There were few smiles which accompanied worrying looks on their faces.

Asked about their demeanor, the President said there was no issue with that, but he was more concerned about the position taken by the coalition to claim the lead even as the elections commission was releasing results at a trickling pace.

Mr. Ramotar said there were still several outstanding issues to be addressed by the Elections Commission with regard to claims from his party about the elections. The PPP claims that there were a number of discrepancies.

The Elections Commission has asked for the evidence.
