Ramotar still convinced PPP/C would have won if total recount was done

FORMER President Donald Ramotar remains convinced that had the Guyana Elections Commission carried out a total recount of the over 400,000 ballots cast at the May 11 elections, his party would have emerged victorious.

The People’s Progressive Party now intends to pursue legal options to challenge the results and seek a recount of the votes.

In an address to the nation, the former President who led his party to its first defeat at the polls in 23 years, said the results have been shrouded in controversy.

“While we are disappointed, hurt and aggrieved, I urge you to remain calm in the face of widespread provocation associated with triumphalism”, Ramotar urged his supporters.

He said the PPP should be proud of its record of success in “restoring our economy and dramatically transforming our country over these difficult years of struggle.”

According to Mr. Ramotar, the party will have to redouble its efforts to keep it strong and resilient.

The PPP narrowly lost the elections by just over 4,500 votes. The Guyana Elections Commission had conducted a number of recounts that had been requested by the party and found nothing that pointed to fraud.

The American, British and Canadian governments have also dismissed the PPP/Civic’s allegations of electoral fraud and continue to stand by their position that the elections were free, fair and credible.
