Ramsaroop questioned by CID in Charandass Persaud Probe

Political Advisor to the People’s Progressive Party, Peter Ramsaroop, was today questioned by investigators attached to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Guyana Police Force.

Speaking to News Source this afternoon, Mr. Ramsaroop said the questioning surrounded his friendship with former Government Member of Parliament, Charandass Persaud. He said he was questioned for over eight hours and was not allowed to leave during that period.

“I was very shocked to the type of questions I was asked. Most of the questions, in my mind, were political. What political party you were with, what is your role in the political party and I’m not sure how does that relate to any investigation”.

Charandass Persaud is being probed over allegations surrounding the illegal export of gold. It was Persaud who switched votes in the no-confidence motion and voted against his own coalition government, triggering early elections and political turmoil.

On the night of the vote, Ramsaroop was seated in the National Assembly just behind Persaud and ushered him out of the Assembly after his vote. He was also spotted at the Ogle Airport early the next morning as Persaud departed Guyana for a connecting flight to Canada.

Persaud has claimed that Ramsaroop is a friend of his, who he asked for security protection because of his fears of possible reactions to his vote in the no-confidence motion.

Days after Persaud left Guyana, it was revealed that he was being probed in relation to possible large gold purchase and the illegal export of the gold.

Persaud has admitted to requesting information about gold purchase and export but has denied any wrongdoing.
