The Members of Parliament for Region 10 along with the Regional Chairman and the Mayor’s Office are in full support of the ongoing protests by healthcare workers and teachers in the region against the government’s vaccination policy, which has seen scores of health workers being locked out of the Linden Hospital.

In a joint statement, the political leaders in the community today announced a full shut-down of the region in protest of the government’s policy which has also resulted in unvaccinated members of the community being denied government services.

The Region 10 leadership said the government’s position is dictatorial and discriminatory and is not the best way to fight the pandemic and vaccine hesitancy.

According to the officials, Region 10 already has a shortage of much-needed doctors and nurses due to transfers and migration, and the lockout of nurses and doctors, because they are not vaccinated against COVID, is creating more problems than solutions for the community.

The Region 10 leaders also called out the government over its requirement for persons seeking government services to be either fully vaccinated or produce a negative COVID-19 test result.

According to the officials, taxpayers in the region are now being denied services that are being funded by their tax dollars.

In addition, there is also a concern in the Region 10 area over the government’s decision to remove scores of persons from the public assistance programme, leaving them to fend for themselves although they are vulnerable.

The shutdown is also being called to bring attention to the scores of young people who were fired from their government jobs in Linden and the closure of the St. John’s ambulance brigade which has seen trained health workers being sent home.
