With the government pushing ahead with its plans to build a new bridge over the Demerara River, the Region 4 Chairman, Daniel Seeram is calling for consultation to be held with the residents who are likely to be directly impacted by the construction of the bridge.

The Regional Chairman has written to the Ministry of Public Works on the issue.

Seeram said while he embraces the project, during a recent visit to the area earmarked for the bridge, residents raised concern about not being consulted at all about the project, although they have lots of questions.

According to the Regional Chairman, while the Neighbourhood Democratic Council in one of the areas has given its no objection to the project, the Chairman of that NDC has admitted that there was no consultation with the NDC on the matter.

The Regional Chairman said the RDC welcomes the transformative project since it will have a positive impact on communities, but he believes the persons who will be directly impacted by the construction of the bridge must be properly consulted before the Region gives its no-objection.

The Government has already indicated that some properties that will be in the way of the construction will have to be purchased and removed by the government. 

The affected properties are expected to be in the Nandy Park and Continental park areas.
