While the country continues to see a decline in new and active COVID-19 cases, which Health officials believe is a result of the vaccination campaign,  there is still concern that the country can regress as a result of vaccine hesitancy in some areas.

Health Authorities are particularly worried about the situation in Regions Two, Eight, and Ten which account for relatively low vaccination rates.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony today said the authorities now have to be on the lookout for cases from those Regions because it is expected that some of the cases might be of the more severe form of the virus.

“In the areas where we have a lot of people still unvaccinated, unfortunately, we are going to have more cases and some of those cases are going to be severe and would require hospitalizations,” the Health Minister warned during today’s COVID-19 update.

While Region Three now continues to record the highest number of cases, and currently has the highest number of active cases, there is a worrying trend in some communities in the Regions where there is a low vaccination rate.

In some Regions, like Regions Four and Six, where the vaccination rate is relatively high, some communities are still seeing a high number of cases.

The Health Minister is warning that the situation can become complicated.

“And if people remain unvaccinated some of them would die, so to prevent all of that, it is basically to go and get vaccinated,” Dr. Anthony encouraged.

There are currently 1,836 active cases across the country with an additional 95 cases recorded in the past 24 hours.  

58 persons are now hospitalized across the country with 9 of those persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.
